Gold Prices in Dubai: How They're Set and Why They Change Daily
Why gold prices in Dubai update every morning, how making charges work, and whether Dubai gold is actually cheaper than Europe or the US.

Gold in Dubai does not have one price. There's a spot rate that changes every morning, a making charge that varies per shop, and 5% VAT at the till. Add tax-free refunds for tourists and the picture gets layered. Here's exactly how a gram of 22K is priced from the moment you walk into a shop to the moment you pay.
The daily spot rate
The Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group publishes the morning spot rate per gram in all four karats — 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K — and shops update their window displays to match. The rate tracks the London fixing, converted to AED, so a strong dollar day pushes prices up in dirhams even if dollar gold stayed flat. You can see today's number on jewellery-group displays and on apps like Gold Rate Dubai.
Making charge
On top of the metal cost sits labour. A plain gold bangle might carry 10–15 AED per gram in making; a diamond-set wedding set can run 30–60 AED per gram. The making is where you negotiate — it's up to the shop and often inflated on sticker so there's room to come down. Ask for the making charge separately on your bill; it's your lever.
VAT and tax-free
The UAE charges 5% VAT on finished gold jewellery (but not on investment-grade bars of 99%+ purity). Tourists can reclaim most of the VAT through the Planet tax-free scheme: ask the shop to issue a tax-free receipt, validate at the airport Planet kiosk before check-in, and the refund hits your card or comes out as cash minus a processing fee.
Is Dubai actually cheaper?
On the gold metal itself, Dubai is competitive but not dramatically cheaper than Europe or the US — the global market sets the floor. Where Dubai wins is the making charge: in London or New York a crafted piece might carry 100%+ markup over melt value, while Dubai shops routinely sell closer to melt plus 15–25%. The practical answer: Dubai is cheaper on crafted pieces, roughly even on plain investment bars.
