Deira Gold Souk: A First-Timer's Guide (2026)
How to shop at Deira Gold Souk in Dubai: how prices work, how to haggle, what to buy, when to go, and how to avoid being overcharged.
2 min read

The Deira Gold Souk is a narrow covered street in old Dubai where over 300 jewellers trade from behind the same glass. The city has newer, air-conditioned alternatives, but the souk is still where locals come for weight, grammage and a conversation about the daily rate. This guide walks you through what to expect, how prices are set, how to haggle, and what you should actually walk away with.
How gold prices work in Dubai
Dubai gold is priced from the daily spot rate per gram, published every morning by the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group. The display inside each shop shows four rates: 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K. On top of the metal cost sits the making charge — a labour fee per piece, often 10–30 AED per gram, higher for intricate work. 5% VAT is added at the till. For tourists, that 5% can be partly refunded through the Planet tax-free scheme at the airport.
What to buy
Bangles and chains are the simplest first purchase — the price is almost all metal, so you're not overpaying for complex making. Rings and earrings with detailed filigree carry a higher making charge but are often the most memorable souvenirs. Avoid "gold-plated" pieces at the souk; everything on display here is hallmarked. If you're buying for someone back home, ask for 22K rather than 18K: it's the regional standard and looks warmer under skin.
How to haggle
Haggling at the souk is expected, but only on the making charge — never on the gold rate itself, which is published and the same everywhere. Walk into two or three shops, ask for a quote on the same item in grams, then come back with the lowest number and ask to be matched. A reasonable final discount is 10–20% off the sticker; anything more and you may be looking at a lower-quality piece.
When to go
The souk opens around 10:00, closes between 13:00 and 16:00 for prayer and heat, and reopens until 22:00. The 19:00–21:00 window is the busiest and most atmospheric; mornings are quieter and give you more negotiating room. Fridays are family-heavy. Dress modestly — this is still old Dubai.
Getting there and nearby
Take the Metro Green Line to Al Ras station, then walk five minutes north. From the Gold Souk you're one block from the Perfume Souk and five minutes from the Spice Souk — plan all three in one evening. Across the creek by abra (1 AED water taxi) you'll land in Bur Dubai and the Textile Souk.
FAQ
- Is Deira Gold Souk cheaper than malls in Dubai?
- Usually yes on the making charge, because overheads are lower. The gold rate itself is the same across the UAE. Mall jewellers like Damas and Joyalukkas often price-match if you ask.
- Is gold at Deira Gold Souk real?
- Yes. All pieces sold at the souk are hallmarked and inspected by the Dubai Central Laboratory. The hallmark stamp shows the karat (916 = 22K, 750 = 18K).
- Can tourists get a VAT refund on gold?
- Yes. Ask for a Planet tax-free receipt when you pay, then validate at the airport Planet kiosk before check-in. 5% VAT minus a small processing fee is refunded to card or in cash.
