24K vs 22K vs 18K Gold in Dubai: Which Karat to Buy
Gold karat guide for Dubai shoppers: colour, durability, resale, price difference, and when to pick each karat for jewellery.

Every gold shop in Dubai shows four prices per gram: 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K. The numbers mean purity — 24K is 99.9% pure, 18K is 75% pure, the rest is alloy — but the right choice depends on what you'll do with the piece, not just the price per gram.
24K (999) — pure gold
The purest, warmest and most expensive gold on the shop display. It's soft — too soft for daily rings and bracelets, which will scratch and warp. Dubai sells 24K mostly as investment bars, commemorative coins and gift chains that will live in a jewellery box, not on a wrist.
22K (916) — the Gulf standard
22K is the default for Gulf jewellery: 91.6% gold, 8.4% alloy, warm yellow colour, holds value very well. Soft enough that an Instagram-worthy filigree can be executed, hard enough for daily chains and earrings. If a Dubai jeweller asks "same as always?", they mean 22K.
21K — Egyptian/Saudi favourite
21K (875 purity) is a step down in gold content and up in alloy, slightly firmer than 22K. Popular in Egypt and Saudi Arabia and widely stocked in Dubai. Good middle ground if you want 22K colour but more wear resistance; cheaper per gram.
18K (750) — for daily wear and gem settings
The international standard for engagement rings, luxury watches, and anything that needs to hold a stone. Harder than 22K, cooler colour (depending on alloy — rose, white or yellow), and the right choice if the piece will be worn hourly. 18K comes in rose and white variants that 22K rarely does.
Which to pick
Daily ring with stones → 18K. Daily chain or bangle → 22K. Gift that will sit in a box → 24K or 22K. Diamond engagement ring → 18K white or rose. For resale value, 22K and 24K hold the most — alloys drag down the melt-value of 18K.
FAQ
- Is 22K gold worth more than 18K?
- Per gram, yes — 22K has more gold. But a well-crafted 18K piece can cost more than a plain 22K one because of making. Compare total price, not karat.
- Does 18K gold tarnish?
- Pure gold doesn't tarnish, but 18K's 25% alloy (usually copper or silver) can oxidise slightly over years. A quick polish restores it.
