Desert Safari in Dubai: What to Expect

A desert safari is the one Dubai experience that lets you escape the glass towers. 45 minutes out of Downtown you're in the red Lahbab or Al Marmoom dunes, in a 4x4 pitching through sand at 60 km/h. Here's what each safari type delivers and what the price actually buys you.

Evening safari — the classic

Pickup 15:00, 45-minute drive, 30 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding and camel ride, sunset photos, dinner at a Bedouin camp (buffet, henna, belly dance, tanoura spinner, shisha), drop-off by 22:00. Average price: 150–250 AED per adult. Best for first-timers.

Morning safari — the active option

Pickup 07:00, dune bashing and sandboarding in cooler weather, camel riding, back by 12:00. No dinner. Price: 100–150 AED. Choose this if you want the thrill without the night entertainment.

Overnight safari — the real desert

Pickup 15:00, dune bashing + full camp night under stars, breakfast, back by 09:00 next day. Price: 400–600 AED. Best for photographers (Milky Way visible in winter), couples, anyone who wants silence after the shows end.

What to wear and bring

Light long sleeves and trousers (sand gets everywhere, nights are cold Nov–Mar), closed shoes for sand-boarding, sunglasses. The camp is modestly dressed — no bikinis. Alcohol is sold at the camp bar if the operator holds a licence.

FAQ

Is desert safari safe for pregnant women or kids?
Dune bashing is not recommended for pregnant women or kids under 3. Ask the operator for a "gentle drive" or skip the bashing section — most are happy to accommodate.
Is pickup included from any Dubai hotel?
Yes — standard operators include free pickup/drop-off from any hotel in central Dubai. Jebel Ali or Al Barsha may incur a small surcharge.
