Dubai doesn't advertise it, but you can have a full day in the city without paying for a single ticket. Fountains, beaches, old neighbourhoods, promenades, art districts. Here are the free experiences that beat the paid ones.
Dubai Fountain show
The world's biggest choreographed fountain — 275-metre jets, music, lasers. Shows every 30 minutes 18:00–23:00, Downtown Boulevard, no ticket. Watch from the mall waterfront terrace or from the Souk Al Bahar bridge.
Walk Al Fahidi Historical District
Old Dubai — restored wind-tower houses, narrow alleys, free entry to the Alserkal Cultural Foundation galleries and the SMCCU museum (traditional dress displays). Combine with Al Shindagha Museum (10 AED) and the gold souk.
La Mer beach and board games
Free beach access, free loungers if you bring your own towel. Giant chess, outdoor games, splash park. Hop over to the main promenade for sunset photos.
Dubai Marina Walk
7 km promenade free to roam. Pass yachts, Palm Jumeirah views, Ain Dubai (world's biggest wheel visible for free from the ground), restaurants if you want to stop.
Alserkal Avenue
Converted-warehouses art district in Al Quoz. 25+ free galleries, Concrete exhibition hall, graffiti walls, specialty coffee. Dubai's answer to Shoreditch; expats love it.
The Palm Jumeirah monorail viewpoints
The monorail itself costs 25 AED, but you can walk from Nakheel Mall to the Palm trunk for free Burj Al Arab + Dubai Marina photos — one of the city's best skyline angles.
