Three ride services dominate Dubai: Dubai Taxi (government-run, cream cars), Careem (Middle Eastern Uber competitor, Amazon-owned), and Uber. All three use the same local drivers and roughly the same prices — but each has quirks worth knowing.
Dubai Taxi (RTA)
Cream and pink Nissan Altimas with roof signs. Hail on the street or use the Dubai Taxi app. Metered — 12 AED flag fall day, 15 AED after 22:00. Cross-city rides 40–80 AED. Fastest for airport pickup where there's a dedicated taxi rank. Credit card accepted.
Careem
The regional favourite — bigger fleet than Uber in Dubai. Three service tiers: Go (small cars, cheapest), Business (sedan), Business Plus. App has multi-stop, scheduled rides, and offers daily discounts. Prices roughly equal to RTA taxis +5–10%.
Uber
Also works in Dubai but with smaller fleet than Careem. Same tiers as globally (UberX, Comfort, Black). Comfort surge-prices more aggressively than Careem on event nights.
Airport transfers
DXB airport has dedicated RTA taxi queues at both T1 and T3 — 15-min wait typical. Pre-booked Careem or Uber from the app lets you skip the queue; meeting point is the dedicated "app pickup" lane. Price from DXB to Marina: 80–120 AED taxi, 90–130 AED Careem/Uber Business.
Tips and payment
Tipping: 5–10% appreciated, not expected. Round up to nearest 5 AED is standard. All three accept credit cards and digital wallets. Request a female driver on RTA app or Careem's "Women-only" option (Hala).
